What’s your North Star?

You're not going to accomplish your 10 year goal if it changes every 3 months.

Like most entrepreneurs, I’ve got a graveyard of domains — hundreds of dot coms, company ideas that I thought would be the next big thing if I could ever launch them.

This is jogging in place instead of choosing a direction and sprinting enthusiastically towards one goal. It is a symptom of dreaming of how you want your life to be.

“Oh, that would be cool if I worked in this sector…”

“Man, I could do this if I launched a company around this…”

“I wouldn’t even have to work if I launched a product like this…”

If your bucket list is a million things long, it’s time for a reality check. You will not get to all of them. Years will go by and you will have done nothing to make progress on your life’s dream.

The solution?

Run everything through your North Star. Instead of dreaming of how your life could be, work backwards from one question:

“How do I want to live my life?”

When you know what the one main goal is — for your company or for you — you can work backwards to set goals and follow through. Once your parameters for success are set, the path to get there becomes infinitely clearer.

It’s important that I keep hammering it home: settle in on ONE goal. As an entrepreneur, doubling down your focus will change the game entirely. If you give your employees 50 small goals, they’ll be distracted for an entire quarter. But if you give them one initiative to knock out over the next three months, you will be shocked at the amount of progress they will make.

The same is true for you as a human, and how you narrow your focus. If you give yourself a lengthy checklist of the equipment you need to buy and the workout trends you need to try to meet your fitness goal, you’ll be stressed out. The stress will stop you from doing it. Instead, if you make a point to walk for 30 minutes a day, and do it for a year — you are guaranteed to be more fit than when you started.

Think about where you want to be in 10 years. How do you want to live your life? How do you want your company to look? Are you still with your company in ten years? What will make you happy?

Answering these questions is difficult, but working to find your true North Star — the 10 year goal you won’t change every three months — allows you to work backwards and figure out what you need to do today to get it done.

It’s the difference between jogging in place and sprinting towards a finish line. It’s the difference between a life of scattered dreams and a life of focus and intentionality.

This is how I believe we should plan our goals. Not for today, or this quarter, but for a lifetime of success — however we define that.
